Every Month* . Timed clockwise swim .
Choice of Long or Short route.
*Jun,Jul,Aug start an hour later

Challenging yet Fun (without or with a wetsuit)
Participants are affectionately known as 'The Polarbears' .

Sea conditions are variable (and with technology, forecasts are more accurate) however there are just those days when Cherry reef is working and its just not a good idea to swim there.. or the forecast swell is >4m ...on these days a more controlled swim is possible and the multiple routes have been mapped to ensure a swim will take place. The route will be confirmed at the briefing.

Meet

Meet at Clifton 4th,
Sign-in at recorder's desk (indicating race number),
Acclimatise while awaiting the race briefing,

Listen

Listen to the race briefing and take note of any route changes,
High-five the headcount controllers,
Pose for a Group pic,
Under Starters Orders,

Swim

Swim the demarcated route (and listen to any instruction from water safety team),
Take sequenced finish-tag to recorder's desk,
Attend the lucky draw

1SOMS - Preferred Long Route

This route has something for everyone.. It's a lekker route with fabuolous views.. 
The start is in the shallows, direction of swim is clockwise, finish is in the shallows

(After the 1st right-shoulder turn)
Aim for the red house above the wide-block of flats above Moses beach (Sea Point side)..

(After the 3rd right-shoulder turn)
Aim for the red roof bungalow on the Ridge..
Its a fine swim back (towards Camps Bay side)

1SOMS - Short Routes

400m (1 Lap)

This is an introduction to openwater swimming.
The start is in the shallows , direction is clockwise

800m Lapper (1 Lap)

This route serves as one of the backup routes for poor weather conditions.
The start is behind the wave-break and the finish is also behind the wave-break.
Direction of swim is clockwise.

Lapper (800m)

The start is behind the wave-break and the finish is also behind the wave-break.
Direction of swim is clockwise.

Camps Bay Tidal Pool (150m)

Starting in the shallow, there are no walls and no swim-lines. Sighting is needed to keep you on track.
An added complexity is swimmers surrounding you without an ocean to separate you.
Strategic planning is needed to overtake efficiently.
Direction of swim is anti-clockwise.

Sea Point Pavilion (100m)

Pool Open Water Swimming (POWS) .
No walls and no floor used. Turning buoys are 5m away from the walls. Strategic planning is needed for overtaking.
Direction of swim is clockwise.
